Group F Ancient Haplogroup R-P312

Members of Group F are descendants of the Y-DNA haplogroup R-P312, which branched off from R-L151 in about 2850 BCE. After R-P312 the Group F haplogroup lineage branches to R-Z46516 (2850 BCE) — unlike the Group C lineage which branches to R-Z290 (2850 BCE).

All Scots-Irish and Ulster-Scots descendants in Group F are descended from the later subclade R-FTC22641 (1300 BCE) with the majority being descended from the more recent subclade R-FTH9853 (1550 CE).

Group F Research Findings

In FamilyTreeDNA Rutherford & Ruth** Surname project Group F:

Haplogroup R-FTC22806 has a New Zealand descendant from an ancestor who lived in County Antrim in the early 1900s.

Haplogroup R-FTH9853 is the ancestor of at least 8 descendant lineages known as R-FTG29055, R-FTG33696, R-BY135601, R-FTC25434, R-FTG48613, R-FTH5485, R-FTH45667 and 1 yet unnamed lineage. Of those descendant lineages, their Ulster-Scots Rutherford ancestors lived in counties Donegal, Fermanagh, Londonderry, and Tyrone. Several Rutherford families of Scots-Irish descent had ancestors living in the three other provinces of Ireland: Connacht (a large contingent in counties Leitrim and Sligo), Leinster (in counties Dublin, Louth and Kildare) and Munster (in Tipperary and Waterford). And, another Ulster-Scots Rutherford ancestor born in about 1660 CE referred to as Haplogroup R-FTH7744 (also a subclade of R-FTC36117) is believed to be one of the Rutherford brothers investigated in the Four Brothers Mystery, whose descendants lived in County Monaghan. Some of these descendants emigrated to Australia and Canada.

Research Outcomes

We have been able to prove how the American, Canadian and English descendants of three different Fermanagh Rutherford families are related, and how descendants of one of those families settled in County Tyrone before their descendants moved to Connecticut in the 1860s.

We have shown how the Donegal, Fermanagh, Monaghan, Leitrim, and Tyrone ancestral families are related — but there are other Rutherford families in Group F, although descended from R-FTH9853 and living in the USA, who we have still to determine which county their ancestors came from in Ireland.

Summary

All the members of Group F in the FamilyTreeDNA Rutherford & Ruth** Surname project are Scots-Irish or Ulster-Scots descendants of R-P312 — R-Z46516 — R-ZZ11 — R-DF27... lineage, and all from subclade R-FTC22641. Although Group C, Group F and Group L all now share the same Rutherford surname, their ancestors are from different lineages that separated over 4875 years ago.
