Haplogroup R-U106
Members of Group L are descendants of the Y-DNA haplogroup R-U106, which branched off from R-L151 in about 3050 BCE. This haplogroup is a large genetic population group of individuals who share a common paternal ancestor.
The list below shows the Group L haplogroup lineage (oldest to recent). Haplogroup R-M269 formed about 13000 BCE with its most recent common ancestor being born about 4450 BCE, and it is the most common Y-chromosome haplogroup in Western Europe, defining the largest sub-clade of R1b (R1b1a1b). It is strongly associated with ancient Indo-European migrations.
After R-L151, the Group L haplogroup lineage branches to R-U106 (3050 BCE), unlike Groups C and F, which branch to R-P312 (2850 BCE). Although Group L and Groups C and F all now share the same Rutherford surname, their ancestors are from different lineages that separated thousands of years ago.
R-U106 is widely found across Europe and in countries to which Europeans migrated, but is especially significant in Germany and surrounding regions, Scandinavia, and Britain. It likely arose among Corded Ware culture populations north of the Black Sea around 3000 BCE. Over time, different branches of R-U106 became associated with many cultures across the continent, including Celtic, Saxon, Viking, and other groups. For Rutherford families in Group L, Y-DNA testing is helping to connect Scottish and English lineages within this deep ancestral framework.
Members of Group L are mainly descended from the subclade R-A20777 (1200 CE) which subdivides into R-A751 (1450 CE), R-FT459183 (1450 CE) and R-A22130 (1450 CE).

Group L consists of descendants of mainly Scottish and Ulster-Scots Rutherford lineages within the R-U106 haplogroup. Y-DNA testing is helping to distinguish separate branches, identify shared ancestry, and connect these families toward their points of origin in Britain.
Members include testers from England, Scotland and New Zealand whose genealogical records point to Rutherford, Rutherfurd, and related surname spellings in the Scottish Borders and other regions of Britain. Because many of these lineages share deep ancestry within R-U106, the research is focusing on how each branch relates to the others, and whether connections can be traced to documented Scottish or Ulster-Scots progenitors.
Three descendants have the recent Haplogroup R-FT9091. But within the project Group L, the terminal subclades R-FT23444 (1824 CE) and R-YP174 (1854 CE) represent the most recent branches identified. Further testing and traditional genealogical research together aim to clarify relationships among these Scottish and Ulster-Scots Rutherford families.
Summary
In summary, at this stage in the research, all the members of Group L in the FamilyTreeDNA Rutherford & Ruth** Surname project are descendants of R-U106 — R-Z2265 — R-Z18 — R-L257... lineage. They are distinct from Group C and Group F, which descend from the R-P312 branch of R1b. All Group L members identified to date are of Scottish or Ulster-Scots descent.
