This project is open to everyone researching their Rutherford family name and its many variants. Over centuries of record-keeping, different lineages, or indeed the same lineage, have been recorded under different spellings — over 300 are listed by Kenneth Rutherford Davis in his book The Rutherfords in Britain A History and Guide. Whether you or your ancestors are known as Rutherford, Rutherfoord, Rutherfurd, Retherford, or another related form, you belong here. Y-DNA testing can reveal connections that written records alone cannot — including links between branches that spell the name differently. Traditionally, Rutherfurd is the spelling of the Scottish Edgerston line and Rutherfoord, the Hunthill line — both established near Jedburgh, Roxburghshire in the early 15th century.

Y-DNA Project Goals

The Rutherford Y-DNA Project was established to study the great diaspora of the Rutherford clan from its ancestral homeland — its family histories — and how the multitude of lineages are related. A great deal of work has already been done to document these genealogies through traditional research. Yet important questions about connections, shared origins, and links between families remain unanswered.

This Y-DNA genetic genealogy surname project is intended to help provide additional answers to those questions — using Y-DNA testing provided by FamilyTreeDNA — to break through those "brick walls" and resolve uncertainties such as The Four Brothers Mystery and discover our common ancestors. Although DNA testing is not a magic wand that can solve every mystery or answer every question — it is a very effective tool that complements our search of written and oral records, church registers, graveyards, and other sources, to identify connections between the different Rutherford lineages and their origins.
