Haplogroup Overview

In the Rutherford and Ruth** Surname project, descendants of R-P312 can be found in Group C and Group F, and descendants of R-U106 can be found in Group L.

As detailed on the Rutherford and Beyond website, the majority of Rutherford Y-DNA testers come under the R1b haplogroup — which divides into two main subgroups: haplogroups R-P312 and R-U106 — with other individuals spread across R1b.

It is said that Scots who descend from R-U106 are of Anglo-Saxon origin whereas Scots who descend from R-P312 are of Flemish ancestral origins.

But, this is an oversimplification. While there are broad historical connections, a Scotsman carrying either haplogroup cannot assume they belong exclusively to those specific ancestral groups. The actual relationship between these haplogroups and Scottish ancestry requires a closer look at the genetic data.

It is important to emphasize, both R-U106 and R-P312 are massive, ancient “trunk” branches of the human family tree, that formed thousands of years before the Anglo-Saxons, Flemish nobles, or the Kingdom of Scotland even existed.

So, although it is true that R-U106 is a major Germanic genetic marker, and many Scots in the Lowlands (especially southeastern Scotland, which was part of the ancient Anglo-Saxon Kingdom of Northumbria) do owe their R-U106 marker to 5th to 7th century Anglo-Saxon settlers, R-U106 was also highly prevalent among Danish Vikings. Many R-U106 lineages in northern and eastern Scotland arrived via Norse and Danish raids and settlements, not Anglo-Saxons. Also, because R-U106 was prevalent in Flanders, many of the Flemish knights who migrated to Scotland after the Norman conquest, actually carried R-U106 rather than R-P312.

And, although it is well-documented that several prominent Scottish clans — such as Balliol, Bruce, Cameron, Campbell, Douglas, Fleming, Home, and Lindsay — have historic Flemish noble origins with R-P312 lineages, these families belong to very specific, deep sub-branches.

R-P312 is the definitive “Italo-Celtic” or Atlantic Bronze Age marker. The vast majority of Scots carrying R-P312 (specifically its massive sub-branch R-L21, and then R-DF13) are descended from the indigenous Iron Age Celts, Picts, and Gaels who lived in Scotland for thousands of years before Flemish immigration.

However, if R-P312 — via R-DF27 (a major southwest European branch that expanded along the Atlantic coast, frequently found in parts of France and Iberia) mutates to one of the rarer parallel brother branches, it represents a continental migration that arrived in Britain later. Certain R-P312 subclades were prominent among the nobles of northern France and Flanders who later migrated into the lowlands of Scotland following the Norman invasion and at the invitation of David I e.g. Flemish knights and burghers. And one must not forget: Some historians estimate that up to a third of the modern Scottish population may have Flemish ancestry.

As Group F is related to Robert the Bruce through R-FGC78762 the suggestion is that it is through Flemish lineage.

Summary

Although Group C, Group F, and Group L all now share the same Rutherford surname, their ancestors are from distinctly different lineages that separated nearly 5000 years ago. A major goal of this research project is to determine how these three groups relate to the Rutherfords of Edgerston and the Rutherfoords of Hunthill.
